Decarbonising the UK’s housing stock is one of the largest challenges the country faces. In 2019, homes accounted for 13% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, mainly due to burning fossil fuels for heating, according to the Climate Change Committee. There are nearly 30 million homes in the UK and a wide range of tenures, which makes policy in this area complicated.

Kindly hosted by Savills, this in-person seminar we will explore the challenge and some of the solutions in both retrofitting existing stock and the new homes being built. There will be plenty of opportunity for Q&A from the attendees and the seminar will be followed by networking drinks.

Marion Baeli, Partner, PDP London Architects
Marion is an architect and author who has designed and delivered many large scale, complex projects. She collaborates with key developer clients and estates in central London, placing her passion for low energy design at the centre of her work. 

Part of the NLA Net Zero panel, she approaches sustainability with a pioneering attitude, her book Residential Retrofits, 20 Case Studies followed the delivery of the award winning Princedale Road project which was the first certified PassivHaus retrofit in the UK. Marion also sits on the board of the PassivHaus Trust.

Most recently, she has been involved in the Chelsea Barracks Townhouses development, the restoration of The Garrison Chapel and the contemporary and sensitive upgrade of Eighty Strand.




Millie Todd, Associate Director, Alternatives research, Cushman & Wakefield
Millie Todd leads Cushman & Wakefield’s research for living and specialist markets. She undertakes data-led research, analysis, and reporting on all aspects of the living market, as well as healthcare and life sciences. From macro-economics to market dynamics, demographic modelling to market forecasting, she helps internal and external clients make key decisions. Millie also writes market leading research publications, providing clients with market intelligence and insightful analysis.
 
Prior to Cushman and Wakefield, Millie accumulated over 5 years experience, having joined from property market intelligence company Dataloft. She was a Senior Analyst at Dataloft, providing consultancy to clients, including investors, developers, and policy makers within the living sector. Prior to that she was at CBRE.




Sunita Van Heers, engineer-architect, founder, managing director, SuReal
Sunita is the founder of SuReal, a consultancy firm that supports companies and government agencies in making buildings, city projects, and companies more sustainable while keeping in mind the well-being of its occupants. She is a well-known sustainability expert, guest lecturer at several Universities and has extensive experience in public speaking.

Sunita is adept and driven to have a sustainable impact on our society. Rich in international experiences on different scales and typologies, she can provide advice on social, ecological, and economic sustainability. This advice is always supported by academic research, extensive practical experience, and specific studies concerning the project itself. Her starting point will always be the context, but she will consistently look for a realistic future-proof solution. She does not focus on single facts but opts for an integrated approach within a team. “Value co-creation” is therefore one of the core values of SuReal. The advice is further supported by the team through energy studies, (inter) national references, comfort studies, materials studies, water studies, ecology studies, ... and all this worked into a financial feasibility for the entire lifespan. Her experience with more than 100 (inter) national similar projects gives her a broad sustainability perspective.




Emily Williams, Director, Residential Research, Savills
Emily is a Director in the Residential Research team in Savills. She joined the department in 2012, and now manages the development thought leadership program, primarily focusing on sustainability, the housing development pipeline and planning policy. She led the Savills report “The Carbon Challenge”, which was launched last year at COP26 and her recent work has covered topics including the development of green premiums, the new homes market after the end of Help to Buy, and the increasing importance of biodiversity and environmental gain in residential development.
